Z Abilities guide for Dragon Ball Legends
Z Abilities are one of the biggest — and most misunderstood — power levers in Dragon Ball Legends. Here is how they work, how they spread across your team and how to get the most out of them.
What is a Z Ability?
A Z Ability is a passive bonus attached to every character. Unlike their battle cards, it works as soon as the character is part of your team: it raises one or more stats (Health, ATK, DEF, Damage Inflicted…) for the team members who meet its condition — usually a shared tag.
That’s why a team is never just the sum of its characters’ kits: a mediocre fighter can be an excellent Z Ability carrier if it hands out big bonuses to a category you play.
Levels: I, II, III and IV
A Z Ability unlocks in levels from I to IV. Each level strengthens the previous one; level IV is the maximum. In DBL Optimizer, the level is set in the panel that unfolds when you hover a card (under the card on mobile), so you can simulate a team that isn’t fully unlocked yet.
Key point: levels don’t stack. If level III gives “+30% Health” and level IV gives “+40% Health”, the level you reached (40%) counts — not the sum of both. For every stat, the tool keeps the highest unlocked value.
Zenkai Z Abilities
A character that has been Zenkai Awakened unlocks an extra Z Ability, separate from its regular one. Both add up: a Zenkai character brings its original Z Ability and its Zenkai Z Ability. The optimizer counts the Zenkai Z Ability at its maximum. That is what makes Zenkai units such sought-after team supports.
Power Resonance (ULTRA only)
ULTRA characters get an extra ability that only they have: Power Resonance. It is tied to a specific tag (Cyborg, Saiyan, a movie saga…) and works in two ways:
- If the ULTRA is the Leader — it gets the full values, usually +30% Damage Inflicted and +30% Ki Recovery.
- Otherwise — the bonus is multiplied by the number of fighters in the team carrying that tag: typically +5% per character, so +15% with three carriers. Trios play no part: all six characters count, bench included.
A few older cards have no Leader branch and only keep the per-character bonus; one of them, Omega Shenron, gives it to its allies instead of itself.
Careful: unlike Z Abilities, Power Resonance only triggers once the battle starts. It is therefore not part of DBL Optimizer’s summaries, which quantify your lineup. The tool does show its state, though: a ⚡ Resonance badge under each ULTRA’s Z Ability level reads “leader” when the full values apply, or “× N” with the number of tag carriers in your team. The details sit under “Uncalculated Effects”, with a warning when your ULTRA is the only one carrying its tag: its bonuses will stay at the minimum, even if the rest of your Z Abilities line up perfectly.
One limit worth knowing: support units, which also count in game, are not modelled by the tool.
Conditions: tags, episodes, colors
Most Z Abilities only benefit characters that meet a condition, based on the game’s labels:
- Color — Red, Yellow, Purple, Green, Blue, Light;
- Class tags — Saiyan, Son Family, Fusion Warrior…;
- Episode tags — movies, sagas…;
- Character tags — Goku, Vegeta…;
- Battle style — Melee type, Defense type….
In practice, a Z Ability giving “+40% Strike ATK to Saiyans” only boosts the Saiyans in your team. Building a team whose characters share the same tags lets every Z Ability benefit everyone: that is the heart of optimization. The optimizer’s “Team tags” table shows at a glance which tags are shared, and by whom.
Propagation to teammates
A Z Ability belongs to one character but reaches the whole team. For each teammate, the condition is checked line by line: part of a Z Ability can apply to one character and not to another.
The Z Ability Tree in DBL Optimizer shows exactly that: an arrow goes from the targeted character to each teammate, green if 100% of the Z Ability is received, yellow if only part of it applies, red if nothing does. It’s the quickest way to spot a carrier whose bonuses are wasted.
The Leader privilege
The Leader (★) is treated differently in the calculation:
- as a receiver, the Leader gets every Z Ability in the team unconditionally;
- as a giver, the Leader’s Z Ability applies unconditionally to their two trio teammates; other characters still need to meet its usual conditions.
Changing the Leader can therefore transform a team’s summary. In the tool, set the Leader with the star, or click “Disable leader” to compare with a team without this privilege. In Proud mode, the privilege follows the trio the Leader actually fights with — one of the things the Trio C analysis checks.
How Z Abilities combine with equipment
Z Ability and equipment bonuses land in the same calculation layers (base, pure, direct), which multiply each other. A big “base” Z Ability therefore amplifies the “pure” lines of your equipment. Details are in the equipment guide.
How to optimize your Z Abilities
- Group tags. The more tags your characters share, the more widely conditional Z Abilities apply.
- Favor Zenkai carriers. Two Z Abilities beat one.
- Pick the right Leader — ideally the one whose Z Ability would be most blocked by its trio teammates’ conditions.
- Check coverage with the Z Ability Tree: a yellow or red arrow is lost potential.
